Sending Email to a Fax Machine

One of the features of ProtoFax is sending email to fax machines.  The ProtoFax Server software can retrieve or receive email via a network connection and deliver it directly to the destination fax machine through a fax modem connected to the computer.  ProtoFax can either retrieve email from an existing email box, or you can create an email box on ProtoFax and receive email directly on the ProtoFax Server, without a need for an external mail server.  Below is an example of configuring ProtoFax to check an existing email box and send its contents to a fax machine.  The following example uses the ProtoFax POP engine.  You can also use the ProtoFax SMTP receiver.

Before proceeding, this is a summary of the information that you will need:

POP User Name
The user or login name for the email box that you want ProtoFax to check.

POP account password
The password for the email box that you want ProtoFax to check.

POP server address
The IP address of the mail server that has the email box that you want ProtoFax to check.

Fax number
The phone number of a fax machine.
With the above information, proceed with the following:

Objective: Check an email box and fax its contents.

• Open the ProtoFax Server Administration.
• Go to the User Management tab.
• Click the Add a New User button.
• Enter a unique User Name.  For POP accounts, this name is used internally by ProtoFax.
• Set the Account Type to 'POP'.
• Enter Information for
             POP user name
             POP account password
             POP server address
             Fax number
• Leave all other settings at their defaults
• Click Apply
• Go to the Services tab.  Check Load on startup for POP and Fax/Pager services
• Click Apply
• Launch the ProtoFax Server

ProtoFax will countdown, retrieve any email from the email box that you specified, and fax it to the fax number that you entered.  Be sure that the mailbox that ProtoFax is checking has mail in it to fax!

Common Errors & Solutions

Cannot bind to port…

If you attempt to start the ProtoFax SMTP/Printer Driver service and receive the error:

Cannot bind to port 25

in the ProtoFax event log, this indicates that there is another application listening to this port on this IP address.  Change ProtoFax to a different IP address or port number on the Services tab of the ProtoFax Server Administration.

Modem dials pager service and
immediately hangs up

If your modem dials your pager service and hangs up immediately, add AT&M0 to the Optional Modem Init on the Modify Pager Service screen on the Pager Settings tab under User Management in the ProtoFax Server Administration.  This string disables ARQ compression.
