Hardware Requirements

Here are the minimum recommended hardware requirements for ProtoFax v3.1:

ProtoFax is designed to work with a TCP/IP network.  While the ProtoFax server must run on a Windows® NT, 95 or 98 system, it can be placed on a network with Windows®, UNIX, IntraNetware®, AIX®, or any other server that communicates via TCP/IP.  ProtoFax was built on standard Internet protocols so it is compliant with TCP/IP networks.

On your network, install ProtoFax on any Windows® NT, 95 or 98 machine.  The machine must have the following:

          Pentium® 100MHZ or higher processor
          16 megs RAM or more
5 megs or more of free hard disk space
          for program files
          Class 1 fax modem

Modem Notes:
In our lab, we have tested ProtoFax v3.1 with the following modem manufacturers and  models:

    USRobotics Sportster modems
    USRobotics Courier modems
    Hayes Accura modems
    Practical Peripherals modems
    Intel modems
    Best Data modems
    Zoom modems
    Supra modems
    Cardinal modems

ProtoFax delivers faxes, numeric and alphanumeric pages through one or more class 1 fax modems connected to the machine on which the ProtoFax Server software is installed.

The ProtoFax fax/pager engine manages the fax modems.  Internally, ProtoFax utilizes 'fax/pager' ports, starting at fax/pager port 1 and continuing up to fax/pager port 8.  With the ProtoFax Server Administration utility, you associate Windows® COM ports to ProtoFax fax/pager ports.  You need one COM port for each fax/pager port.

A key to correctly using your modem is making sure that it is set to Hardware Flow Control.  Most modems default to this setting, however there are cases when modems have been set to other settings.  To assure proper modem settings, make sure that you have installed your exact modem model in the Windows™ control panel (a setting of "Standard Modem" is sometimes not sufficient for your particular modem).  Then run the ProtoFax Wizard, selecting your modem from the list of modems that the wizard provides you.

The number of Fax Ports available to you depends on your ProtoFax Server's license.  ProtoFax currently supports up to 8 fax modems installed on a single server.  In general, installing more than 3 or 4 modems on a computer requires the use of a multi-port serial card.  Two such cards are:

          •  Digiboard™, http://www.digiboard.com
          •  RocketPort™, http://www.comtrol.com

Networking Notes:
ProtoFax is specifically designed to be used on an intranet or on the Internet.  To use ProtoFax with the Internet, the ProtoFax server will need a connection to the Internet.  Types of Internet connections include:

      •  An ethernet connection (via a network card)

      •  ISDN adapter

      •  Dial-up modem

If you access the Internet with a dial-up modem, you still must have an additional fax modem for ProtoFax to deliver faxes, numeric and alphanumeric pages.
