Sending Web Documents to a Fax Machine

Another feature of ProtoFax is sending Web or HTML documents to fax machines.  ProtoFax will render HTML tags directly.  You can simply include HTML tags in email messages or scanner directory files, and ProtoFax will render the HTML onto the fax page.

You need to be able to configure your web page to send the desired document via email or write it as a file directly to the ProtoFax scanner directory.  The following discussion chooses the email approach.

Capturing Web form data is a common task.  Countless utilities accomplish this task.  Any utility that emails Web form data or writes it as a file should be able to be used with ProtoFax.  You can also use CGI-WIN, CGI-BIN, ASP, Visual Basic™, Delphi™, Visual C++™, C++ Builder™, Paradox™, dBase™ or just about any other development package.  Below is a list of utilities and resources that are in use with ProtoFax.

ProtoFax SCAN CGI

•  Cold Fusion® is available from: http://www.allaire.com

PolyForm™

•  Available from http://www.ora.com

The ProtoFax Server software can retrieve or receive email via a network connection and deliver the fax directly to the destination fax machine through a fax modem connected to the computer.  ProtoFax can either retrieve email from an existing email box, or you can create an email box on ProtoFax and receive email directly on the ProtoFax Server, without a need for an external mail server.  Below is an example of configuring ProtoFax to check an existing email box and send its contents to a fax machine.  The following example uses the ProtoFax POP engine.  You can also use the ProtoFax SMTP receiver.

ProtoFax will work with any web server.  This example assumes that you can capture HTML data and email it to any email address.

Before proceeding, this is a summary of the information that you will need:

POP User Name
The user or login name for the email box that you want ProtoFax to check.

POP account password
The password for the email box that you want ProtoFax to check.

POP server address
The IP address of the mail server that has the email box that you want ProtoFax to check.

With the above information, proceed with the following:

Objective: Check an email box that contains Web data and fax its contents.

• Open the ProtoFax Server Administration.
• Go to the User Management tab.
• Click the Add a New User button.
• Enter a unique User Name.  For POP accounts, this name is used internally by ProtoFax.
• Set the Account Type to 'POP'.
• Enter Information for
             POP user name
             POP account password
             POP server address
• Click Retrieve fax # from subject
• Leave all other settings at their defaults
• Click Apply
• Go to the Services tab.  Check Load on startup for POP and Fax/Pager services
• Click Apply
• Launch the ProtoFax Server

Configure your web page to send the HTML data to the email box being checked by ProtoFax.  Place the fax number that you want ProtoFax to fax to on the subject line of the email message.  ProtoFax will countdown, retrieve any email from the email box that you specified and fax it to the fax number that you entered.  Alternately, you could send the email directly to ProtoFax's SMTP receiver.
